Farm Bureau Members Tour ADM’s Carbon Sequestration Project

What started as an idea from State Representative Charlie Meier last December, recently came to fruition on February 23^rd with Farm Bureau members from across his district touring ADM’s Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facility in Decatur.

Representative Meier attended the IFB’s Annual Meeting in Chicago last December and witnessed delegates from across the state discuss organizational policy about carbon sequestration and CO² pipelines and thought it would be a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about the subject by touring ADM’s facility in Decatur.

Approximately 40 Farm Bureau members from counties across Representative Meier’s District accepted the invitation and traveled to Decatur on February 23^rd to learn more about ADM’s progress toward ambitious regenerative agriculture goals.  On-site, attendees learned more about the process of capturing carbon from ADM’s ethanol facility, converting it to liquified CO², and injecting it more than a mile underground to be stored in the geological formations of the Illinois Basin.  ADM representative noted that the company was the first to be granted a Class VI permit for their CCS well by the US EPA and has been successfully operating their CCS wells in Decatur for more than a decade, injecting more than 3.9 million tons of CO².
